Social Stories
Do you have a friend that you trust to speak up when it comes to the wellbeing of you and your family?
That’s my best friend, a kindergarten teacher, who guided me as a new mom. I’ll never forget standing in my kitchen when she told me to write a social story. That night I researched what a social story was and here I am 7 years later still writing them.
A social story is a short, structured narrative that explains social situations in a clear and simple way. It helps individuals navigate social interactions and the emotions that come with them.
I’ve written social stories for each baby we welcomed into our family, for airplane trips we’ve taken, and for those big first days of school. These stories have helped my kids feel confident when facing new or unfamiliar situations. As adults, we often feel anxious about change or travel—so it’s no surprise children do too. Preparing them ahead of time doesn’t just ease their worries—it brings us peace of mind as well.
Children take pride in their personalized social stories. These cherished books offer comfort in any situation and become meaningful keepsakes they’ll treasure for years to come.
I highly recommend reading these stories several weeks in advance. When it comes time to experience the situation at hand, your child will become the expert and watch them take the lead!
Encouraging Narratives offers a growing library of social stories, with new titles released every month.
We’d love to hear the positive impact a social story has had on your child! If you have a few minutes to share your story, please email info@encouragingnarratives.com.
